The Boat

What kind of boat is Calico Skies?? She is 1985 Sabre 36 footer. Sabres are high quality, hand-built sailboats originating from Raymond, Maine. Calico Skies was designed as coastal cruiser/racer but with high attention to detail in build quality she is more than capable of blue water passages.

Tankage Limitations

Lots of Jerry Cans

As you may have noticed Calico’s tankage is a bit light for extended cruising. She only carries 18 gallons of diesel in the main tank. Additionally, we carry 40 gallons of diesel in jerry cans as well as 10 gallon of Gasoline for the Honda 2200 generator as well as our outboard.

Water Capacity is ample at 77 Gallons. Before our first Atlantic crossing we decided to add a watermaker. We installed an EcoTech 780 AML watermaker which is powered by AC rather than DC. The combination of large lithium bank and large solar array allows us to make water using the inverter or via our Honda 2200 if solar doesn’t allow. We opted for an AC watermaker because of the higher output. Our watermaker is capable of 32gph.

Sail Inventory

We have a pretty extensive sail inventory on Calico Skies. Since we only carry 58 Gallons of diesel we have to be able to keep the boat moving across vast distances and variable conditions. In addition to a main and 130% genoa we also carry an asymmetric spinnaker as well as a code zero for light air work. When the wind pipes up we have staysail on a solent rig.
